We are both pretty sad about the cruise-portion of our trip ending. For me it's the all-you-can-eat buffets, 24 hours a day....Mmmmmmmm!!! Tara will miss the relaxing nature of the boat and being catered to. It has been a nice break from the backpacking that we have been doing so far and the five months of it we still have to look forward to. So, we got back on the road. We went straight to the train station and got our tickets to Rome, our last stop in Europe. When we arrived in Rome we took a very disoriented Underground ride and then a long hike weaving through the city trying to find our hotel with no map to help us out. On a side note, I must comment on the pickpocketting scene here in Italy. Before we left the train station to find our hotel, Tara left me with our backpacks while she tried to get directions. During those 15 minutes or so, I was able to spot two people who were obviously in cahoots conducting a pickpocketting scheme. There was a guy and a girl, both about 27 or so. What caught my attention in the first place was when I was looking in another direction, I could see the guy eyeing our pile of luggage, while rubbing his hands together ...

Here is part of an article about RFID skimming: Federal agents attending this year's DefCon hacker convention were in for a surprise when top RFID researchers revealed that they scanned five convention attendees' and potentially one Federal agent's RFID-enabled cards. Researchers set up an RFID reader with a web camera that skimmed RFID-enabled cards and took a picture of their owners as they passed within two to three feet. Using information read on an RFID chip, a hacker could clone the chip and impersonate the card's owner. Depending on the chip, a hacker could also discover personal information about the owner. Federal agents, including those from the FBI and Department of Defense, only found out about this project when they were told by a DefCon staffer. One former agent's response: "I saw a few jaws drop when he said that" RFID chips aren't just found in government IDs--several states are currently issuing enhanced drivers' licenses (EDLs) that incorporate vicinity-read RFID chips as part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. The State Department's new PASScard (passport card) also incorporates the same RFID technology. Even though your money belt will contain your most valuable items (passport, credit cards, etc.), it's important to have a separate wallet for petty cash and day to day uses. That way you're not always reaching into your pants to pay for a meal (um...sorry that came out wrong) plus it can act as a decoy for pickpocket. Lose the wallet and you still have your money belt and essentials. When shopping for a travel/decoy wallet I always look for a few essential features: - Avoid leather. Go with a synthetic material that will dry quickly. - Make sure your wallet has a zip pocket for coins. In most countries coins carry a lot of value and it helps to keep them together for easy access. - Get a tri-fold wallet instead of your normal bi-fold. The currency notes of various countries vary in size and will most likely stick out of a bi-fold wallet. - Avoid velcro since it will wear out. If you have the time, it's easy to replace the velcro in a wallet with metal snaps. This video was shot with a Canon G9 on loan.
